Detroit itself has thousands of fires a year, many of which are started on purpose. Fire and water meet, as the city appears to be in a constant state of burning, as a mysterious underwater city becomes a central image in the film’s emotional trajectory. The film opens with a shot covering abandoned and overgrown homes and sets the tone of a single mother desperate to provide for her family. Horror explored through a creeping sense of dread and the occasional bloodshed, Gosling transforms Detroit into the mythical city of “Lost River”. Ryan Gosling, ostensibly an outsider, fetishizes Detroit and exploits it in search of cryptic and apocalyptic symbols and at least as a collection of images, Lost River may superficially be the most “strait” film of the last decade. The percentage of all web usage that comes from smartphones and other mobile devices is growing, and it won’t be long before mobile internet users overtake desktop and laptop users in terms of web traffic.
